Baby Shower Cake Designs

Baby shower cake designs are often inspired by the theme of the baby shower, the tastes of the new mom, and the season. Design incorporates a few things: structure, décor and icing. How the icing, décor and structure are combined, is what gives the cake its personality.

With my event planning, I deal mostly with wedding cakes. There are a variety of different wedding cake structures, but they are mostly tiered with round, square, hexagonal or topsy turvy tiers. Baby shower cakes can be any of these too, but in addition to those, there’s a whole world of cake molds and additional creative “baby” designs to consider, or dream up on your own.

Some of the hot baby shower cake designs are: baby bunting, belly cakes, topsy turvy, tiered round cake with pregnant mom figurine topper, ABC toy blocks, baby bottles, baby animals, a baby's face, pea in the pod, sheet cake with baby shower inscriptions, or baby shower gift cakes.

Before choosing the baby shower cake designs you’re interested in, consider the mom-to-be. Consider her style, what theme or colors has she chosen for her new baby, or what theme have you chosen for the shower? Tie it all together. Whatever you do, stay clear of provocative baby shower cakes!

Square Baby Shower Cakes
Square baby shower cakes, especially in cubes, are perfect for baby block cakes. Tiers can be stacked on each other at an angle, or on the stand at an angle to create some angular fun. What a fun way to play with shapes!

Another fun thing to do is to add a couple round layers to the mix.  

Round Baby Shower Cakes
When most people visualize simple...they see round baby shower cakes. Why? Round is no doubt the most common shape used. It's not until more recent years that they have branched out into new shapes: hexagons, blocks, squares, topsy turvy, you name it.

Round will work in most spaces and are pretty universal. They're pretty safe.  

Don’t
If she has registered for all ducky linens and accessories for her baby, then don’t get her a cake with teddy bears all over it. If she’s a conservative executive whose 90 year old grandmother will be at the shower, then don’t get her a provocative cake like the one shown here.

Do
If you’ve chosen a baby shower theme around an image of a cool and chic mom with a belly bump, then do create a belly bump cake. If your mom-to-be has registered at Restoration Hardware for their entire pink and brown polka dot collection, then do a pink and brown polka dot cake!

If you’re hosting a baby shower in a warm or humid area, say, in your backyard in the middle of July, then stay away from cakes with ingredients that will not withstand the heat. Read more about this on our cake icing page. For instance, butter cream or cream cheese frostings do best when refrigerated up until they’re eaten, or kept in an air conditioned room.
