Cake decorating patterns

I'm trying to figure out a good cake decorating pattern to use. I want to make a really interesting looking buttercream frosted cake, but I'm not too savvy with all the different kinds of piping, etc. If anyone knows of some patterns that are relatively easy for a novice and end up looking good, please share them!
