Need some
diapercake lowdown? If there’s one thing we’re hearing less of lately,
it’s “what in the world is a diapercake?”. If you still don’t know what
a diapercake is, you may have not attended a baby shower within the
past five years. A diapercake is simply a round tiered structure
(usually 2-3 layers, visualize a wedding cake, or just look at the
pictures above) made of diapers. You don’t eat it, of course, but some
are decorated so cutely you just might want to.
If you're a big DIY, and you’re interested in making your own diaper
cake for a baby shower present, then go for it! Make sure to

If you haven’t the time, or desire to take on the task, you are in
luck. There are dozens and dozens of online diapercake boutiques,
waiting to take your order. Before diving in and purchasing the first
cute diaper cake you find, there are many things to consider:
Diaper Quality
We’ve heard time and time again from our clients that they received an
adorable diaper cake at their baby shower, only to find out when they
took it apart that they were dollar store diapers. Inexpensive, leaky,
and non absorbent diapers often get tossed and never used. When
purchasing a diaper cake, make sure that they contain diapers of good
quality, like Pampers Swaddlers or Huggies. If organic is
important to you or the mom-to-be, go with a company that provides
organic diapers like Seventh Generation chlorine-free disposable
diapers, Huggies Pure and Natural, or Nature BabyCare.
Quality of
the Ingredients
Diaper cakes are a not inexpensive, some of them cost well over $100.
You want to make sure that you're not only purchasing quality diapers,
but quality and practical items that decorate it. Make sure they
contain products that you would use with your own baby: Burt’s Bees,
Gund, Safety 1st, Johnson’s, Gerber, and Playtex. Check with the
merchant to make sure they only use quality ingredients in their
designs.
Number of
Diapers
When doing your comparison shopping, check on the quantities of diapers
provided in each cake. If one diaper cake has 72 size 1 diapers, and
another has 50, and they’re the same price with similar products, which
one would you purchase? Don’t ever worry about purchasing too many
diapers. Babies go through an average of 6-7 diapers a day, so don’t
feel like you’re purchasing too many diapers in any size. They will get
used!
Method of
Assembly
We’ve heard of many diaper cakes where diapers were hot glued together,
making them unusable. Make sure the cake you’re purchasing is assembled
using rubber bands, string, or other materials that will not make the
diapers unusable. Most diapers are rolled up and fastened with rubber
bands. Several moms at a recent baby shower we planned expressed
concern over the diapers becoming curled up on the edges and hard to
use. The veteran moms in the group, who had been through several
diapercakes in their time, said that it wasn’t an issue. The diapers
flattened out just fine in a hanging diaper holder, a drawer or box.
Want to DIY, but not totally? Many diapercake makers offer plain,
assembled but undecorated diaper cakes for those wishing to do their
own decorating, but don't want to deal with the hassle of assembling.
