Martha Stewart Dessert Recipes

I have made many baby shower desserts with my Entertaining book full of Martha Stewart Dessert Recipes.

They're beautiful, they're easy, they're light. My absolute favorite is the Brown Sugar Angel Food Cake. I have made this dozens of times for every occasion you can imagine. I'm a sucker for any dessert with a fruit sauce. Besides, blackberries grow crazy wild all over my neighborhood every summer.

For all you DIY'ers, I'm going to keep this recipe real simple and advise you to purchase an angel food cake and whipped cream at the store. If you have a little bit of time, you can even do a boxed angel food cake. If you'd like to take on making your own from scratch, of course we have provided the recipes.

If you're purchasing the cake and whipped cream, then all this dessert really requires for you to make is the blackberry sauce. Here is the recipe: (it makes 2 cups)

3 pints blackberries
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons creme de cassis or blackberry liqueur
5 tablespoons sugar

In a large saucepan combine all the ingredients and cook over low heat, stirring often, until the sugar is dissolved and the sauce begins to thicken, about 20 minutes. (At first I was worried about making this sauce for a pregnant mommy. But, the alcohol surely boils off after 20 minutes.)

Put through a fine sieve, pressing on the pulp. Discard the seeds.

Back to the angel food cake! Carefully cut the cake in half horizontally and spread a layer of the whipped cream filling, about 2 cup on the bottom half of the cake. Arrange whole blackberries in the filling and replace the top half of the cake.

Heap the remaining whipped cream on top of the cake and decorate with clean, edible fresh flowers (like Thompson and Morgan pansy called "the Joker", pictured). Serve with the blackberry sauce.
